When we run

When we run

We run two times a week with a number of groups going out at different speeds from approx. 6:30 to 11 minute miles. We meet at 7pm on a Tuesday and Thursday evening.

If you want to try out the club we are happy for you to try 3 sessions, however we ask that if you come more often than that, you become a member - it's very reasonable!

We are a friendly running group, and new members come along every week, so there are always new faces. We welcome new people at any time throughout the year.

Where we run

We meet at Abbey View Track, Verulamium Park, Holywell Hill, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 2DL (behind Westminster Lodge Leisure). Below is a map of where we meet.

Tuesdays

Track

Interval sessions are organised by our coaching team.

This is where we all run for a few minutes and then rest for a few minutes. Everyone runs at their own speed, and can stop at any time, so don’t be frightened that it’s on the track, this is the easiest session to go to if you are not sure when you might need to stop!

Road Runs

Group runs at different speeds and distances around St Albans

All road runs are led by members who volunteer and the runs being offered are announced at 7pm, so make sure you get there in good time. They are usually ‘described’ by speed in minutes per mile (i.e. 10 minute mile pace = 10 minutes to run a mile). The easiest option on offer is usually 5 miles at 10 minutes/mile pace and other runs on offer increase in distance and pace right up to 7 or 8 miles at 7 minutes/mile pace.

Interval Sessions

In addition to the track, there are usually other interval sessions on offer on a Tuesday night. During the summer we often have lake reps in the park, suitable for all abilities, and hill sessions or other intervals either in or near the park throughout the year.

Thursdays

On Thursdays we do not use the track, but a few different runs of different speeds and distances go out onto the road. We do not have use of the track on Thursdays, but we do have use of the changing rooms and showers.

The structure is the same as for road runs on Tuesdays, but with a slower option of roughly 4 miles at 11 minute/miles on offer too.

Monthly Pub Run

On the last Saturday in every month there is an organised 'pub run', based for almost 20 years at the Elephant and Castle PH in Amwell, a small hamlet close to Sandridge and Wheathampsted (postcode AL4 8EA). These generally consist of a 5/7 mile run (although we can accommodate shorter or longer runs subject to demand on the day) taken at a very modest “conversational” pace over scenic country routes. The run leaves the pub car park at 10.30 and returns in good time for a pub lunch or drink at midday. The pub runs are really social events - nothing formal or fast – so just turn up and you’ll be made very welcome. “

*Note: Saturday runs are regular, but usually by arrangement - there is no guarantee that a run will leave at these times. Also a few groups may go out at different speeds so it may be worth checking that there is a group for your speed. Please check the calendar for up to date information.

Other Runs

We also hold various other training activities throughout the year. These are normally communicated to members through our facebook group. Members often use the facebook group to arrange other group runs on weekends or at other times of the week.
