St Albans Striders’ men achieved 3rd place and the women 4th place in the Southern Counties Veterans League held at Lee Valley on the evening of 25 July, with both teams sitting in 3rd place out of 9 on a cumulative basis after 3 events. In order to secure as many points as possible a number of athletes stretched themselves to cover a diverse range of events notably Andrew Maher (100m, 400m, 1,500m & triple jump), Alison Putko (100m, 400m, & triple jump), Clair Drage (100m, 1,500, & 2,000m walk) and Nick Walker (triple jump, discuss & javelin). Alison and Clair achieved personal bests in the 100m and triple jump respectively. Well done to the other participants: Nigel Aston, Phil Yaxley, Kate Dixon, Brian Yeomans and Christine Canning.

This week the results were announced from the Fairlands Valley 4 x 3,000m relay event in Stevenage which took place on the evening of 21 July and included 11 of the top running clubs from across Herts and Beds.

The combined St Albans AC and Striders teams were in the top three in four of the six categories as follows:

Senior Men: 3rd Place (Joshua Edwards, Matthew Cooper, Matthew Holman, Will Bowran)

Senior Women: 2nd Place (Sarah McGrath, Megan Wilson, Lily Seach, Lucy Waterlow)

Mixed: 3rd Place (Steven Eames, Paul Greaves, Hannah Burkhardt, Kate Dixon)

Vets Men: 2nd Place (Jonathan Scott, Stephen Hosty, Max Campbell, Jim King)

Stand out performances were from Sarah Macrath, Megan Wilson, Will Bowran and Joshua Edwards.

Over the weekend Andrew Mckillop completed the stunning and picturesque but also hilly and wet Montane Lakeland 100 mile race in an amazing 34hrs and 51mins. This ultra event encompassed the whole of the lake district fells. The climb, descent, rugged terrain, darkness and tricky navigation generally result in a 40-50% failure rate over the 100 mile course so a finisher’s medal is a very treasured possession demonstrating true grit and determination. Well done Andrew!

As further demonstration of Andrew Maher versatility, Andrew completed the Round Reading Ultra Marathon 50K on Saturday in 5 Hours 26 minutes, well within the first half of the 200+ field.
