The St Albans Striders membership year runs from April to March each year, concurrent with the England Athletics membership year.
This year's St Albans Stampede, part-organised by the St Albans Striders, has grown in popularity since its conception in 2015. It challenges participants to run as many miles as they can over the 12-hour period. The event reached maximum capacity this year, which saw the countryside of Hertfordshire littered with runners from 9am to 9pm (although no actual litter as the clear up was spectacular, despite the storms).
The gruelling endurance event saw 250 runners take to the scenic and hilly trails of Heartwood Forest and Nomansland on Saturday 7th September.
Runners can pick to run it relay style in teams or pairs, or go it solo. Paul Adams, a St Albans Strider, clocked up an astonishing 76 miles coming first male.
St Albans Striders also saw wins across multiple other categories including First Open Team who were the overall mileage winners which included Freya Weddell, Tom Toyer, Jake Butterfield and Barnaby Walker. Freya also won the overall Female Fastest Lap.
First Mixed Team of 4 were Heather Hann, Lucy Waterlow, James Pickett and Ian Bryson
The First Female Team of 4 consisted of Striders Eleanor Lambert, Emily Hickey-Baird, Laura Mitchell and Carla Moseley.
The Fastest Male Pair were Matthew Nicholson and Chris Dennell, Fastest Open Category Pair were Claire and Nick Buttenshaw. The Fastest Open Team of 8 were also all Striders: Kate Dixon, Tom Croft, Martin Healey, Bethany Hopla, Lily Seach, Errol Maginley, Jenny Maginley, Gavin Clifton.
The last laps saw participants navigating the tricky trails in the dark, keen to pass the finish line before the timer hit 9pm as otherwise the last lap of four miles would not count.
260 miles north, ten Striders took part in the iconic AJ Bell Great North Run. James Chasen was the first Strider home with a time of 1:20 and Nathalie Richards was first female Strider coming in at 1:35. Jethro Offemaria conquered his first Great North Run, still smiling at the finish line despite the rain.
An unbelievably strong week for Striders!
