Weekly Report w/e 27 Jan 2019

Saturday saw the South of England Athletic Association Cross Country championships. This is a large event with well over 2,000 competitors in all age categories. St Albans Striders senior teams finished in 32nd place (men) and 50th place (women). The hilly and muddy course across Parliament Hill and Hampstead Heath in London provides an enjoyable challenge for runners (8.5 miles for the men and 4.6 miles for the women). Fastest Striders to finish were Jonathan Scott (time 54:42) and Wendy Walsh (in a time of 35:51).

Jack Brooks ran yet another marathon on Saturday - his 477th! He finished the Callaway Gardens Marathon, Georgia USA in a time of 4:42:30 coming 3rd in the 65/69 age group. The tough 2-lap course has an elevation gain of over 1,000 feet. Jack said "It was around minus 2 degrees at the start, but warmed up after the first 3 miles and there weren't too many icy patches to deal with. Much of the route was alongside lakes and the course was traffic free and very scenic."

Also on Saturday, Ruth Martin completed the Peddars Way ultra marathon, 47 miles across Norfolk from Knettishall to Holme in 9 hours 16 minutes coming in as 10th woman overall and 3rd in her age group.

On Sunday, several Striders took part in the Ashridge Sprint Duathlon (5k run, 22k bike, 2.5k run). Stephen Hosty was first Strider home finishing 17th.
